PM Narendra Modi ‘scores big hit’ with Chinese social micro-blog Weibo: Report

China’s official media welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to open an account on the popular Chinese social micro-blog Weibo, saying he scored a “big hit” ahead of his visit to China next week.

“Modi scores big hit with micro blog in run-up to visit,” read the headline in the state-run English language China Daily, while another official newspaper Global Times headline says ‘Modi debuts on Weibo ahead of state visit to China’.

An Early Look At The Apple Watch App Ecosystem

With the Apple Watch now officially on the market, and soon to be on the wrists of several million customers – possibly as many as 20 million this year, according to some estimates – there’s a lot of curiosity about what kind of app ecosystem will spring up around the new device. Will Apple Watch owners actually be interested in reading news, shopping or playing tiny games, or will the Watch serve its customers better when it fades into the background, allowing you to pay at checkout, unlock hotel room doors, and only alerting you when it has something really important to share?

Xiaomi Mi3 Setbacks

You know how the saying goes: fast, cheap, or good; you may only pick two. This is the general rule of thumb when it comes to our expectations towards most of the things in our world today, especially when it comes to retail products.

As a disruptive force in the world of smartphones, Xiaomi seems to be a company that continuously defies the laws of retail products. With their recent foray into Singapore, they brought with them the same amount of fanaticism, fervor, and pandemonium with their trademark “fire sale” that distinctly heralds their brand.

I was also consumed by this “fire” and finally managed to get a set of their flagship offering, the Xiaomi Mi3, after several failed tries. Here’s a short review 3 months into using the phone.

Upon making successful payment for the phone, the delivery was made within 3 to 4 working days. The first thing you will notice when the packaging comes is how well-produced it feels in your hands, and how it completely exceeds your expectations. Although the packaging material is just normal corrugated cardboard, it feels sturdy and cut with the purpose to accommodate miscellaneous accessories while allowing the phone to take the center stage.

The Xiaomi Mi3 is a beautiful, classy device. Sleek and thin, it’s 8.1 mm thin and sports a uni-body design with no unsightly screws or any removable battery casings.

I got the black colored one, so the back of the phone feels smooth and matte upon touch, while the front is completely black and protected by Gorilla Glass. On the top, there’s the proximity and light sensor, the phone speaker, as well as the front camera and a status LED. Right below you can see the three synonymous Android buttons (menu, home, and back) that are softly illuminated without any signs of light bleeding.

Switching from an iPhone to Android, I was at first uncomfortable with the large size of the Mi3 and worried that it was not ideal for day-to-day usage. The iPhone is easily accessible by thumb and is perfect for single hand usage, and this new device initially seemed to demand attention from both my hands. Fortunately, my fears were unfounded as details in the Mi3’s design quickly helped me to acclimatize to its handling.

Kinect Distances is coming With New Windows Version

Microsoft is releasing the new version of Kinect for Windows on July 15. Both the sensor and its corresponding software development kit will be available next week, according to a statement from the Redmond, Washington, tech giant.

The sensor is priced at $199 and became available for developers to preorder on June 5. The Kinect for Windows software development kit (SDK) will debut as a beta on same day as the sensor. The sensor will become available to the general public later this year.

The device boasts better 3D capabilities and a wider range of view than the first Kinect, and it can also capture 1080p high-definition video. Thanks to improved infrared capabilities, Kinect v2 can also see in the dark. Additionally, updated skeletal tracking means the sensor can now detect six people. (The original Kinect could only keep track of two.)

Playing Video Games Can Actually Change the Size of Your Brain

Video games, like apples, might keep the doctor away — or at least help improve your mental and physical health.

From improving memory to helping to alleviate stress and to increasing brain density, video games have been found to improve mental health in several scientific studies over the years. Games on the Xbox Kinect or Wii that require physical movement also keep people more active.

TOKYO — A powerful typhoon pummeled the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa on Tuesday, paralyzing transport and prompting U.S. forces based there to cancel all outdoor activity.

The Okinawan government said 10 people were injured, one seriously. Separately, a man was reported missing from a fishing boat in rough seas off Kyushu island, to the north.

One of the strongest and biggest typhoons to hit during Japan's summer months, Typhoon Neoguri was packing sustained winds of 194 kilometers (120 miles) per hour and gusts up to 240 kph (148 mph), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
